Inflammatory Bowel Disease, IBD, includes Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. There is a placebo-controlled study published recently that shows almost 50% remission of Crohn’s Disease in a small group of patients that used medical marijuana. If this study can be replicated, it would be huge. Until the followup studies are done, we are optimistic that medical marijuana is worth a try for IBD especially Crohn’s Disease.
Here is a link to an article that quotes (and links to) the study. It appears that THC is the component of medical marijuana that the researchers felt was the active ingredient. It remains to be seen what benefit CBDs have in IBD. In our opinion since we know that CBD’s can help the anti-inflammatory effects of THC, why not use both? Also, the side effects of medical marijuana can be way less than the side effects of other effective medicines for IBD. We think it can add a lot to the lives of folks who have Crohn’s, Ulcerative Colitis, or other Inflammatory Bowel Diseases especially if combined with other effective treatments.
